Warning: Spoilers lurk throughout this list.
If you’re big and bad, maybe nothing scares you, but many fans find the Walking Dead scary sometimes. You tell yourself, “It’s only a TV show,” but somewhere in your reptilian brain there’s a twitch. The Walking Dead walkers are just so well-executed, your disbelief is suspended to the moon and back.
When Maggie and Aaron were in that sewer tunnel and those walkers came out of the walls, for example. What about when little Meghan was playing in the mud and we found out that walkers might be underground anywhere? Or when Carl got all cocky and was nearly eaten by a trio of walkers? How about all the way back to season one, when Rick was cornered in the tank and Glenn saved him? Yeah, that was one of the scariest parts of The Walking Dead.
The scariest parts of The Walking Dead usually involve large walker herds. Like when Daryl saved an injured and ailing T-Dog from certain death on the highway back in season two. He pulled dead walkers on top of T-Dog and himself until the shambling group passed.
What are some of the most scary Walking Dead walker run-ins that made you pee a little?

That Time Maggie Went Into the Sewer Tunnel to Find Glenn
Season 6, Episode 5, “Now”
When viewers don't know if Glenn is dead or alive, neither does Maggie, but she's not going to wait to find out. Instead, she sets out from Alexandria via the sewer and comes across these muddy, rotted walkers embedded in the walls of the tunnel. If it weren’t for Aaron, pregnant Maggie could've ended up as a tunnel buffet. It's wrong on so many levels, but mainly the lower one.
Noah’s Revolving Door Death
Season 5, Episode 14, “Spend”
Maybe it's because it's so up-close and personal but, few things have been quite as upsetting and urine-inducing as Noah getting ripped to pieces while poor Glenn watches.
When the Crew Encountered a Super Herd
Season 4, Episode 3, “Isolation”
Daryl, Michonne, Tyrese, and Bob come across a sea of walkers as they drive toward the hospital. This is the first time we really see just how big a herd can get, and just how terrifying and powerful such a herd can be.
That Time Daryl Saved T-Dog from a Herd
Season 2, Episode 1, “What Lies Ahead”
T-Dog, raging with fever and bleeding, is a sitting duck when a walker herd comes down the highway. Daryl acts fast and covers T and himself with dead walkers to hide their presence and mask their smell. Does not look like fun.
When Glenn and Nicholas Are Pinned on a Dumpster
Season 6, Episode 3, “Thank You”
Sure, Nicholas is a jerk. Has been from the start. And when he and Glenn are pinned next to a fence on top of a dumpster, he has the unmitigated gall to off himself and then pull Glenn down with him into a pit of walkers. Glenn’s tumble caused an uproar among Walking Dead fans around the world as they waited to discover Glenn’s fate. But now that they know he lived to tell the tale, let’s look at just how horrifying that scene was. Just say nope to dumpster walkers and saving dopes like Nicholas in the first place.
When Daryl Had to Ironically Fight His Way Out of a Funeral Home Basement
Season 4, Episode 13, “Alone”
If you’ve seen Inglourious Basterds, you know how Aldo Raine feels about fighting in a basement. Daryl would second that as he fends off a bunch of walkers while using every angle of the small mortician’s room in the dark, putting the corpses between him and walking death.
That Time Glenn Fought a Walker While Tied to a Chair
Season 3, Episode 7, “When the Dead Come Knocking”
Our gang has learned to improvise and Glenn Rhee has come a long way from delivering pizzas pre-zombie apocalypse. Merle, in revenge for being left behind in Atlanta and chained to a pipe, throws Glenn into a room with a hungry walker. Glenn is duct-taped to a chair and has had to hear Maggie possibly being tortured and raped by The Governor. He’s had just about enough and goes completely ninja IKEA on the walker, using the home furnishings in the room, and finally the chair he’s taped to, to dispatch it.
The Hot Mess Asphalt Walkers
Season 5, Episode 7, “Crossed”
They’re not exactly walkers when they're melted into the pavement so these walkers are probably best described as asphalt s'mores. They're still deadly and chompy with their runny faces and torsos, though. Hot as hell nightmare street. Luckily, the came in handy when Daryl needed to fight a cop.
Daryl and Aaron, Stuck Inside a Car
Season 5, Episode 16, “Conquer”
Out on the road to find new recruits, Daryl and Aaron end up caught in trap set by Wolves after they discover 18-wheeler beds filled with walkers. That moment when they are inside and about to face the music with Daryl having a last smoke is scary and devastating. Their Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid moment is cut short, though, when Morgan shows up and cuts a path to freedom via his trusty stick.
That Time the Herd Knocked the Walls Down in Alexandria
Season 6, Episode 8, “Start to Finish”
This is how you get walkers. Lead a mega herd near your stronghold and then have Aaron leave pictures behind for a group of bandits to find and then watch Morgan let those invading marauders off the hook with only Carol to pick some of them off while the majority of the soldiers are away. With Glenn, Abraham, Daryl, and Sasha elsewhere, the gang must wear walker gut ponchos and walk right through the herd to escape the city. Not since the gang tried this trick in Atlanta has the show reveled in such anxiety.
